Welfare Garden

What

A weekly wellbeing gardening group in which students will be involved in clearing, planting and growing in group exercises and individual work in the garden at Dalkeith Welfare Hall. The group meets at 9:45am for tea, coffee and breakfast, before a 10am start.

Students will be part of a team working towards common goals and regular attendance is encouraged regardless of weather. They will be solving practical problems, learning to give and take direction, providing support to new members, and sharing tasks to make up a well-functioning team.

The group is intended to supporting students’ health and wellbeing, with an activity that gets them outdoors, in touch with nature and learning new skills.

Students may join at any time, but those who manage to sustain will be put forward for an Adult Achievement Award.

Who

Eligibility criteria applies and spaces are limited. If you are interested, contact us or speak to your Caseworker for more details.

When

The course runs periodically, usually in the summer months, one half day a week. 2025 term begins 18 March 2025 (spring term 18 March-3 June; autumn term 19 August-4 November).

Why

Teaches students all about general gardening, whilst encouraging key skills like problem solving, teamwork and taking direction.

Where

The course is delivered fully outdoors at the garden of Dalkeith Welfare Hall, 36 St Andrew Street, EH22 1BJ.
