Case Study

I began engaging with Access to Industry because of criminal convictions and a desire to learn and progress in life. Having a child motivated me to improve my circumstances.

Previously, I was involved in gang culture and experiencing homelessness. I got myself involved with the criminal justice system and moved to Midlothian to alternative accommodation. I was still experiencing hardship and completed a block of community service. I needed to do something to change my circumstances.

I was referred to Access To Industry due to my criminal convictions. Over time with them, I have gained various qualifications which will benefit me when looking for work. I have additional learning needs, so they ensure that support is in place when I am learning with them. I’m due to sit my CSCS test which I am optimistic about passing, as I have been attending practice sessions for several months. I am also doing a Digital Media course and attending Employability Award classes, and have completed other qualifications including Improving Wellbeing and REHIS Health and Safety.

My regular attendance on current and previous courses has helped with my routine and confidence in a noticeable way. I am hopeful that I will get into college to study further, which will open more doors for me. I have the confidence to do this through the support that Access to Industry has given me.

As well as formal courses and qualifications, I have been able to work on life skills such as communication, teamwork, organisation, time management and budgeting – useful not only when attending courses or looking for work, but in my personal life as well.

I am better placed for further education or employment because of the knowledge, experience and skills that I have gained with Access to Industry. They have helped me improve my circumstances and access opportunities that wouldn’t have been available to me otherwise.
